Located at the corner of Highland and Marcella Streets in Roxbury, Marcella/Connolly Park has a lot more going on for families than its 5 acres reveal at first glance. In addition to being home to the John Connolly Playground named after the Boston city councilor and recent mayoral candidate who lives in West Roxbury. Marcella Park is the hub of many activities hosted by the Hawthorne Youth and Community Center (HYCC). The HYCC found at 9 Fulda Street offers low-cost educational and recreational programs to over 200 5-18 year-olds every year. These youth often showcase their work with murals and performances at the park. Call coordinator Samantha Sadd at 617-427-0613 for more information about HYCC.
Wednesday evenings are a bustling time in Marcella Park. The Hawthorne Walkers, a neighborhood walking group, lead community walks starting from the park at 6:30 and returning at 7:30 after a brisk one hour stroll. From now until June 25th there is also a series of free, low-impact aerobics classes and workshops being offered right in the park on Wednesdays at 6:30. Even more activities are scheduled to ramp up this summer, including free tennis lessons for youth and adults on Wednesday evenings from 5-8pm starting on July 7 and running until August 11 through the Franklin Park Tennis Association. Keep your eyes peeled for more information about upcoming events at Marcella Park within the Kohl’s and Boston Children’s Hospital’s Healthy Family Fun Program’s “Fun in Your Neighborhood” event search page.
