Local Youth Step Up Against Sugar-Sweetened Drinks!

Sugar, sugar, and more sugar—it’s what makes up fruit juices, energy drinks, and sodas. But do you really know how much sugar is in some of your favorite drinks?  The Youth Media Council, aka “Warriors Against Sugar,” knows how much sugar is in these drinks, and they want others to know too!

The “Warriors Against Sugar,” sponsored by the Boston Public Health Commission, is a group of Boston-area youth,on a mission to inform the public about the dangers of sugar-sweetened beverages. Just recently, the youth set a booth up in Copley Square to demonstrate the excessive amount of sugar in drinks by comparing them to popular sweet foods such as cereals and pies.  Did you know that one can of Arizona Tea has the same amount of sugar as 7 bowls of Fruit Loops? Or that the amount of sugar in a bottle of Sunkist equals the sugar in 6 Oreo Ice Cream Sandwiches?

Check out the Warriors Against Sugar in action in downtown Boston here. Are you surprised by the amount of sugar in some of these drinks? What is your favorite non-sweetened drink?
