Apps for smart exercise

Screens are often seen as an enemy of exercise and active living, but they don’t have to be! You can use your technology as tools to help you live a more active lifestyle. There are tons of fitness apps out there, and here are some of the best, free options for helping you reach your fitness and eating goals. Tracking your fitness is a great way to stay motivated and improve your health.

GAIN Fitness

GAIN Fitness comes with a pack of exercise routines that you can do at home or at the gym. You can tell it what, if any equipment, you have and it will give you an exercise routine.

MyFitnessPal has an app and a mobile site, so you can check in anywhere you are. Many people see it as one of the easiest ways to track exercise and calories and has a social media aspect if you want to share your progress or see your friends’ progress. It has a huge database of common foods and drinks.

Lose It!

Like MyFitnessPal, Lose It! is an app that combines tracking exercise and tracking food. It has a huge inventory of common American foods, so tracking your calories and nutrition is super easy.

Johnson & Johnson Official 7 Minute Workout

This app provides you with a great workout that you can squeeze in anywhere. All you need is a chair and 7 minutes, or 11 if you want to include a warm-up and cool-down. The app walks you through each exercise and works for people of all ability levels. 7 minutes is more than enough time to get a great work out in!

Map My Run

Map My Run does exactly what it says; it shows you where you ran (or walked or cycled), as well as your speed, time, and calories burned. You can store certain routes compare your running times against yourself and others.

Challenges by Nexercise

This app uses competition as a way to get you to exercise more. You can include activities like housework or playing with your pets, as well as more traditional exercise like running or walking. Your rank rises the more active you are and you can cash in your points for real prizes!

This app comes with newer versions of the iPhone and tracks your steps automatically. Walking is a key part of living a healthy lifestyle and this app shows you your average steps per day, week, month, and year. Adults should aim for at least 8,500 steps per day and kids for at least 12,000 per day. This app can also measure other things, like your daily fitness, your weight, and your sleep!

Zombies, Run!

This app costs $3.99, but if you or anyone in your family is a zombie-movie lover, it might be worth the money. This app tells you a story about zombies as you run and you can even hear zombies creeping up behind you to encourage you to run faster!

Here are some other apps we’ve discussed before for more ideas!
