Family biking tips

Now that winter is almost over, it’s time to get excited for spring. If the T has been frustrating you this winter, think about using a bike for your commute or just for traveling around your neighborhood!

Boston is quickly becoming a great place to be a biker. More bike paths and trails are being added all the time – check out trail maps here and here!

Biking is a great way to get some exercise and explore. Plus, it’s something that the whole family can do together! To get your kids familiar with bike safety, check out Bikes, not Bombs, whose Earn-a-Bike Program and Girls in Action Program teach kids how to repair and maintain bikes and ride them safely. If you’re worried about riding on the roads, there are some great trails available in Franklin Park, the Arnold Arboretum, the Forest Hills Cemetery, and the Stony Brook Reservation.

Don’t have a bike? Don’t worry! Check out Hubway, Boston’s bike sharing program, which has subsidized pricing available for membership and helmets, for those who qualify. With a Hubway membership, you can get a bike at any of the Hubway locations and then drop it off at another. Hubway just started putting out their bike rental stations in Boston on March 26th and more will be opening over the next few weeks. There are even helmet rental stations, where you can rent a helmet for only $2!

Start mapping out some routes today. Don’t forget to always wear a helmet and stay safe on the roads!
